ESAPEKKA LAPPI JANNE FERM

Have started out in karting, Esapekka got his first taste of rallying in 2007, but it wasn't until 2009 that he really began competing in rallies in Finland. In his second season, he was joined by Janne, his co-driver, and they have raced together ever since. The pair cut their teeth in two-wheel drive categories.

In fact, it was in a C2 R2 Max that they made their debut in the world championship at the 2011 Rally Finland! Their career took a different turn when they switched to four-wheel drive cars in the S2000 class, the then feeder category to the top division, the following year. They swept to the Finnish Rally Championship title in it, winning all seven rounds, but above all made a name for themselves in the WRC at their home event, more than holding their own against a certain Sébastien Ogier in the same class.

The crew’s performance was enough to secure them their first professional contract, still in the S2000 category. They then continued their gradual improvement. Runners-up in the 2013 AsiaPacific series, the Finnish pair won the European Rally Championship in 2014, before claiming the WRC2 title, the final rung on the ladder leading to the WRC, in 2016. By then, they were ready to drive a WRC, and the switch to a new team offered them the chance to drive a top-level car from the 2017 Rally de Portugal.

Once again, they caused a stir, grabbing six stage wins in only their second race, before winning outright in Finland, on just their fourth outing in the WRC! Esapekka and Janne confirmed their undeniable potential in 2018, combining speed and consistency. They proved to be the most promising crew of the next generation, finishing fifth in the championship, just two points behind the fourth-placed crew, with three podiums (3rd in Sardinia, Germany and Wales GB).

All these arguments led Citroën Total WRT, ever faithful to its policy of promoting talented youngsters, to sign the Finnish pair, who have only contested twenty-four rallies in a WRC. At Citroën, Esapekka, who turns 28 in 2019, will not only be able to learn from his celebrated teammate but also continue to add to his reputation as the Flying Finn of the future!
