The rules

Practice

Moto2 riders have two 40-minute free practice sessions at the end of which a first ranking is established. Riders ranked after the first fourteenth in the combined results of the first two sessions will take part in a 15-minute qualifying session (Q1). The four best times will be admitted to the session bringing together the first fourteen of the free classification for a new qualifying session (Q2) which will determine the first eighteen places on the grid. Each row consists of three riders. To qualify, a rider must have clocked a time at least equal to 110% of the time recorded by the fastest rider. With the introduction of the sprint race for the MotoGP class, the Moto2 warm up has been abolished.

Races

The Moto2 World Championship this season comprises 21 Grand Prix races which are run over a distance of around 100km. Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers according to the following scale: 25, 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point.

Technical regulations

While the chassis is ‘free’, all Moto2 bikes have to use the same engine, which puts rider skill to the fore. After nine years, in 2019 the Honda 600cc engine was replaced by a three-cylinder 765cc Triumph engine. The riders have seven engines at their disposal for the entire season. For the past three years, all teams have used the same electronic management system provided by the championship promoter. As far as tyres are concerned, the riders must complete the weekend with 8 fronts and 9 rears. The minimum weight of bike and rider is 217kg.
