MotoGP is the world motorcycle racing championship’s top category. Each year, it is watched live by a TV audience of more than 400 million viewers. For Total, this is a powerful platform for visibility, as well as - and above all – an ideal testing ground. This pioneering spirit is central to the partnership between our ELF brand and the KTM Tech3 team.
ELF links up with the KTM Tech3 team
The MotoGP competition is the elite motorcycle racing category because it brings together the world’s best riders and because the bikes used are innovative prototypes. As technological aspects are crucial, the teams must remain at the forefront of research and development.
This focus on innovation and performance led KTM Tech 3 to sign a 3-year partnership deal with Total and its ELF brand. ELF has been part of the Motorcycle Grand Prix world since 1973. During this longstanding commitment, ELF has won many victories and played a major role in the evolution of competition bikes, as shown by the innovative technical solutions developed for its ELF X or ELF E bikes, protected by 18 technological patents.
With its extensive track record and know-how, the brand is working closely with the young but ambitious Austrian manufacturer KTM, the European motorcycle market leader, and Hervé Poncharal’s Tech 3 team, to help the French team succeed. And this alliance already looks promising...

MotoGP: a unique testing ground
The Group’s chemists and engineers are so interested in this competition because it represents an outstanding testing ground for fuels and lubricants.
MotoGP offers a particularly fascinating test environment because the manufacturers do not all use the same fuel. So, we need to develop products that are adapted to the specific features and demands of the various engines. As explained by Romain Aubry, technical coordinator with Total’s Competition Division: “Our work is to understand the manufacturers’ mechanical issues, interpret them and transform them into chemical formulas”.
In addition to developing custom fuels for just over 50% of the MotoGP teams, we supply custom lubricants for our key partners: the KTM Tech 3 team for MotoGP and Moto2 and Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS (Total partner since 2010) for Moto2.
