ASTON MARTIN RACING wins the biggest race of the year and claims the world title!

ENDURANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – 24 HOURS OF LE MANS

There are very few one-off races that trump the world championship to which they belong. However, that is precisely the case for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Every long-distance racing driver dreams of winning the world’s greatest endurance race one day. It is the holy grail of endurance racing. Physically and psychologically demanding for the drivers whilst being incredible hard on the cars, it is one of the most prestigious races in the world and some of most memorable moments in motorsport history have been witnessed here. This means that a win at Le Mans is therefore very significant and that this year, ASTON MARTIN RACING achieved a very special feat in the LMGTE Pro class! The British manufacturer returned to winning ways here for the first time since 2017, finishing ahead of Ferrari with the no. 97 Vantage AMR of Alex Lynn – Maxime Martin – Harry Tincknell, whilst the no. 95 sister car of Nicki Thiim – Marco Sorensen – Richard Westbrook grabbed third place. “To be honest, that was very emotional,” admitted Alex Lynn at the finish, who also recorded the fastest race lap in LMGTE at 3.10am on Sunday morning. “There were a few tears on the final lap. I’ve been driving this car for the last three years and there has been so much hard work in getting us to this point. It’s amazing. Lastly, in LMP2, a mention for the superb third place of PANIS RACING and its driver trio of Nicolas Jamin, Matthieu Vaxivière and Julien Canal, as well as the heroic comeback of the Team SIGNATECH ALPINE ELF’s driven by Thomas Laurent, Pierre Ragues and André Negrao. Last at the end lap one after suffering a water pump issue, the three men managed to cross the finishing line in fourth position in the category. Meanwhile, COOL RACING enjoyed a successful debut at Le Mans as Alexandre Coigny, Antonin Borga and Nicolas Lapierre finished seventh in class.

Championship update

In securing two places on the podium at this double-points race, ASTON MARTIN RACING won the FIA WEC world manufacturers’ title GT category with one round of the season still to go. The British manufacturer could not have dreamed of a better outcome – win the world’s greatest endurance race and grab the title! With Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen still leading the championship, whilst Alexander Lynn and Maxime Martin have moved up to second in the standings, the drivers’ title is set to be go one of the ASTON MARTIN RACING driver pairings at the season’s final event, the 8 Hours of Bahrain (14 November).

Partner of MissionH24, the programme initiated by the ACO and GreenGT that is preparing for the introduction of electric-hydrogen hybrid prototypes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Total has designed a mobile refuelling station that can be used to supply gas to the car, regardless of the circuit. Operational since September 2019, it now has a supply rate of 2 kilos per minute, compared with 1 kilo per minute for a production car. This means that the prototype can be loaded with eight kilos of hydrogen in no more than four minutes. The difficulty involves controlling the temperature of the fuel tank, which can only support up to 80°C. Total is using the expertise of Total Gaz Mobilité to adapt the fill rate to any changes in temperature and therefore ensure that once a critical threshold is reached, the tank is full. Constantly developing its expertise on the topic, Total has set itself the goal of being able to load fifteen kilos of hydrogen in two minutes by 2024.
On the occasion of this 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, MissionH24 presented its new H24 prototype, optimized in all compartments and which should take to the track in the coming weeks.
